Haneesh Jangra: Q&A with Savile Row tailor and owner of Hanmire

Entrepreneurs 07-04-2021

Haneesh Jangra has clothed some of the most successful and notable men in Mayfair and around the world.  He opened his new store at Shepherd Market, Mayfair, to offer RTW loungewear and casualwear alongside bespoke clothing.

What was your earliest ambition?

I wanted to be known for dressing some of the most noted and successful people in the world. I am lucky enough to have created an outlet to share my passion for clothing with other people.

Who would you most like to dress?

David Beckham. Living legend.

What qualities or features most excite you in a garment?

As a clothing geek, I look for the subtle details of handwork—a hallmark of quality clothing. In a suit, the cut and fit is everything. If it doesn’t fit you well, it doesn’t matter how amazing the fabric is or how much you bought it for.

What item of clothing would you like to own that you don’t currently possess?

My new summer shirts! Made from Italian pique polo shirt cotton, super soft and so comfortable!

What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?

The internet has opened up the fashion market to a global audience. In terms of exposure, competition from new upcoming brands, direct B2C influence and selling, social media plays a huge role in that engagement. Exposure on social media is good for fashion…it is great to see new designs and trends, but for some brands over-exposure is not ideal. The concern with social media is the lack of control, and companies need to take responsibility if it offends or leaves negative impressions on young viewers.

What high street store do you shop at? And what for?

Nudie Jeans. For me it’s the best cut of jeans I have come across. It’s very hard for me to find clothing that fit me on the high street – it’s the reason why I started my business!

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?

The skills of tailoring have changed very little in over 200 years on Savile Row where I was taught to cut and stitch by hand the old-fashioned way. Hand-stitching creates shape and form to a jacket that a machine cannot. Bespoke tailoring is indeed old-fashioned, but our Hanmire cut and style is very much modern. I call it understated elegance.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career, what would it be?

Just do it.
